HOPE CAERGWRLE ABERMORDDU
CARNIVAL
AT THE WILLOW PLAYING FIELD, HOPE
SATURDAY
5th JULY 2014
Another fantastic Carnival ! The sun shone for us yet again and our three villages came together in one big community event that was enjoyed by all. Villagers from babies in prams to nonagenarians eagerly joined the big day of fun. What a great community spirit we have!
Community spirit was also evident in our wonderful procession, led by the Boys Brigade Band. It included some fantastic floats that people had given their time and commitment to put together a good show for everyone’s enjoyment. Our ‘Royalty’; Queen Yanira, and her ladies – in - Waiting Abbie and Chiana, King Joseph and his Princesses Hermione and Millie and Queen Sian and her flower girls; Evie, Sali, Megan and Olivia all looked fantastic. It was good to have a Dragon King especially as we also had our newly adopted mascot, Owain the Dragon this year.
Our celebrity, Tom Hughes Lloyd, did a great job in the crowning ceremony and afterwards had everyone enthralled with his ‘body popping’ moves when he entertained us with some street dancing.
The programme of events that followed were also greeted with enthusiasm from the audience. The African dancers, Ya Raqs, enticed children and adults to join them in some ‘belly dancing’. Magic Matt did a great job entertaining the children and wowed them with his amazing tricks. Two’s Harmony entertained everyone with some wonderful songs we could all sing along to. Bradley Brass played some musical interludes that gave a real village festival feel to the day. Later in the afternoon our local dancers – Dance Maniax gave us an excellent performance from their three dance groups and our local Tae Kwando club gave us an impressive demonstration of their skills.
At the other end of the field we were able to travel back in time with the Celts and the Romans. Cwmwd Ial did not disappoint us and gave their ever popular combat display encouraging some good hearted interaction from the children. Deva Victrix Roman Soldiers injected more colour and excitement into the day and both groups good humouredly joined in our Tug-o-War.
The Tug-o-War proved to be a main event. Our reigning champions, The White Lion Inn were challenged by the Roman Soldiers who bravely used their strength to hold off the valiant White Lion team. After an exciting contest with the crowd cheering them on eventually the Romans were defeated and The White Lion retained their crown and took the Carnival Cup back to its place behind the bar. Afterwards, when offered a go, the children from Ysgol Estyn and Abermorddu Schools couldn’t resist a try at pulling the rope which created more fun and entertainment. Well done Geraint for organising it and thanks to Dave Cottle for supplying the rope.
There was also a variety of stalls and plenty to do on the field. When the children had had enough of the fairground there was plenty of free things to do on the field; an incredible dancing J.C.B., Poppyfields mini farm, puppet shows, a wandering field magician, Magic Matt balloons and Becky and her circus skills did a wonderful job keeping the youngsters amused.
The day ended perfectly with a musical event from Rebel and the Chief. It was a fantastic end to the day! It was great to see families and friends gathered around on blankets, chairs and cushions relaxing and listening to some great music together after an awesome day of fun. And as the band played the last song people danced enthusiastically to bid farewell to Carnival 2014 before drifting away as the sun began to fade over the Willow Playing Fields.
Thank you to all the individuals, groups, organisations, and businesses whose various contributions, alongside that of our hard working committee members, together ensured the success of our community event.
